What are Scars?

A scar is a mark that remains on the skin after a wound or injury has healed. Scars are a natural part of the body’s healing process and are formed as a result of the repair and regeneration of damaged skin tissue. They can vary in appearance, texture, and color, and their final appearance is influenced by factors such as the type of injury, location on the body, skin type, age, genetics, and more.

The different types of Scars

Normal Fine-Line Scars: These scars often result from minor wounds like cuts and gradually heal to become raised lines. Over time, they fade and flatten, but they never completely disappear. Fine-line scars are commonly seen after wounds or surgeries.

Keloid Scars: Keloid scars form when there is an overproduction of collagen at the wound site. These scars extend beyond the borders of the original wound, resulting in raised, often itchy or painful growths of tissue. Keloid scars can be pink, red, or darker than the surrounding skin and may restrict movement.

Hypertrophic Scars: Similar to keloid scars, hypertrophic scars are caused by excessive collagen production. However, they remain within the boundaries of the original wound and do not extend beyond. These scars may thicken for several months before gradually improving over time.

Pitted or Sunken Scars: Scars caused by skin conditions like acne or chickenpox can create sunken or pitted appearances on the skin. These scars result from a loss of underlying fat or tissue.

Scar Contractures: Commonly caused by burns, scar contractures occur when the skin shrinks during the healing process, leading to tightness and reduced mobility.
